Anacostia Playhouse welcomes Stephawn Stephens as its new Executive Artistic Director. Stephens brings over three decades of experience building community partnerships through volunteerism, as well as projects that combine her passion for theater with the goal of serving others in that role.

In his new role, Stephens manages all day-to-day operations of Anacostia Playhouse. He will also lead fundraising programs, as well as arts and community engagement initiatives.

Pat Martin, Chairman of the Board of Anacostia Playhouse, said, “We are very pleased to have Stephawn take on the role of Executive Artistic Director of Anacostia Playhouse. Stephawn brings a combination of energy, leadership and creativity that will serve the Playhouse well into the future. We expect Stephawn to not only continue the Playhouse’s excellent programming, but expand it to reach more members of the community.

Stephens said, “It is a privilege and an honor to be chosen by the Board of Directors to lead the Anacostia Playhouse. The Playhouse is home to so many artists and I look forward to building on the relationships established with existing Anacostia Playhouse artists, as well as seeking out new cohorts to collaborate with to create great art.

Stephens continued, “I think theater should be engaging. I also believe that theater can be transformative, especially when it helps us reflect on our own existence and how we interact with each other and with the world. I hope that when you are here at Anacostia Playhouse you will see work that entertains and expands your perspective.

Stephens’ first project as Executive Artistic Director is the Transitions/Transformations festival which is currently running through May 1. The festival includes performances by Brave Soul Collective and African-American Collective Theatre, the play Requiem for black bodies, interactive performances by the District Playback Theater Ensemble, a concert series and the Playhouse’s third annual New Voices New Works Festival of Plays.
